May 1998: My DVD player is an imported region 1 (ie US NTSC) TOSHIBA SD2107.
This way, here in the UK I get to see lots of my favourite films on DVD without having to
wait for the European consortium to decide on AC3 or MPEG or both or whatever.
Even when/if they *do* decide, no doubt film quality and amount of special features
will be compromised due to the maximum compression required to fit many language and
subtitle tracks onto each disc. I'm not waiting and I *am* enjoying wonderful
features, crystal images and excellent sound quality ... *now* :)
May 1999: Reasonably priced Region 2 DVD player/disc sales have taken off in a big way (since January, really). The problem is that it's VERY difficult to find WIDESCREEN and/or ENHANCED versions of films which can be found under Region 1. Also, because of the many language tracks and European subtitles included, the films suffer from higher compression rates and a slight drop in the number of extras offered. Now is the time to start thinking about a dual standard (PAL/NTSC) and multi-region player!! | ||
